What kinds (like website genres) of websites are the most popular and get the most hits?

The sites that get the biggest number of hits are obviously search engines. Duh.
Beyond that, you see a varied number of popular sites. Sports sites, info sites, forums, anime sites, tech sites, etc. When you’re making a new site, you’re starting from the beginning no matter what. There’s no surefire genre to start a site in that will make it successful. Make the site something you can run and can enjoy to run.
If you have expertise in a certain field, you can create a website that teaches people how to do things. A tutorial website.
Anything that’s creative, seems to work. But if you wanted a site with a community (a place where you can have members, and they interact with each other) Than you will have to hire a programmer, and expect to pay a lot for it.
Many sites such as twitter usually have a starting investment into the millions. So do something creative like a blog if you are not at the point yet.
Statistically, not counting adult websites and search engines, social networking websites (myspace, facebook, et al) are the most popular and get the most hits.
